zero sci-fi

the statement “photons experience the entirety of their journey through space in literally no time” is a very popular one, but it is also misleading. in the context of special relativity, the speed of light is invariant, meaning that it is the same for all observers regardless of their frame of reference. if there were a frame of reference in which light was at rest, then the speed of light would be different in various frames of reference, which would contradict the principle of the invariance of the speed of light. in other words, special relativity would be completely thrown out. conclusion: a frame of reference that has zero spatial width and zero temporal duration is a physically impossible frame of reference. so, while it is interesting to think about what it might be like to be a photon, the truth is that there is nothing “like that.”
